Today (October 24), National Pingtung University (NPTU) President Robert Chen and Professor Dr. Stéphane Mangin of the University of Lorraine (Université de Lorraine, UL) recently signed a sister school agreement (MOU), marking a significant milestone in academic cooperation and international exchange between the two institutions. The agreement not only lays the foundation for collaboration but also establishes an initial consensus on a dual PhD degree program, which will further deepen their cooperation in the future.
The University of Lorraine is renowned for its excellence in scientific research and innovation, particularly in the fields of physics and cutting-edge sciences. With world-class research facilities and faculty, the university has, since its inception, been committed to bridging research and industry, nurturing highly competitive global research talents. This sister school collaboration reflects the university's dedication to internationalization and cross-disciplinary academic partnerships. It is also worth noting that NPTU’s College of Science and UL have maintained a long-standing academic exchange and collaboration, particularly in applied physics and materials science, laying a solid foundation for this sister school agreement.
The partnership between the two universities began in 2019 when Dr. Stéphane Mangin was invited to give a lecture at NPTU, during which he introduced UL's student exchange program. At that time, Professor Dr. Hua-Shu Hsu from NPTU’s Department of Physics actively encouraged student Leo Lin to seize this valuable opportunity. With Professor Hsu’s support and guidance, Lin decided to compete internationally and successfully secured the prestigious Jean Lamour Institute's scholarship from the leading research institute in spintronics in France. He spent six months in France for academic exchange and research. This experience not only marked a significant academic breakthrough for Lin but also launched his international academic career. With Professor Mangin’s encouragement, Lin successfully applied to UL's PhD program after completing his exchange, demonstrating NPTU students' and faculty’s outstanding potential and competitiveness on the global stage.
In 2021, Lin officially became a PhD student at UL's Institute of Physics and the only Taiwanese student at the university. Through this experience, he deeply appreciated the diversity and challenges of studying in an international academic environment, collaborating with students from more than five countries. Lin noted that studying abroad is not just about experiencing different cultures but also about elevating one's academic standards and work ethic.
Furthermore, Professor Mangin’s lecture at NPTU, particularly the academic insights shared during the Speech in the class of Modern Physics I, greatly benefited the students and faculty of NPTU’s Department of Applied Physics. It deepened their understanding of UL’s academic environment and increased students’ willingness to participate in international exchange programs. Moving forward, NPTU hopes that this sister school partnership will lead to more opportunities for faculty and students to engage in academic exchanges in France, fostering deeper cooperation in scientific research and jointly promoting academic excellence and global education development.
