Write the World in English|2025 International Essay Competition – NPTU × RMUTT × UNISMA
From Two to Three: A Broader Writing Exchange
The Department of Applied English at National Pingtung University (NPTU, Taiwan) launched its first international essay competition in 2024 in collaboration with its Thai sister school, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT, Thailand). This year, the department expanded the initiative by inviting a new partner—Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA, Indonesia)—to co-host the 2025 International English Essay Competition. Held on April 21, the competition took place in person at each university campus, with real-time interaction via an online platform. A total of 52 students from Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia participated, and 25 faculty members attended the opening ceremony, demonstrating strong academic exchange and international engagement.
Opening Ceremony: Remarks from Senior Representatives
Special thanks go to the following distinguished representatives for their opening remarks:
Professor Dr. Ying-Wei Liu, Vice President of National Pingtung University
Associate Professor Dr. Sommai Pivsa-Art, President of Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi
Asst. Prof. Dr. Erna Sulistyowati, Ph.D., Vice Rector for Academic and Collaboration Affairs, Universitas Islam Malang
Their speeches encouraged students and emphasized the importance of language learning and global collaboration. Their presence set the tone for the event, enriching the competition with deeper educational significance and international vision.
Behind-the-Scenes Support
The success of the event was made possible through the efforts of many. Special appreciation goes to Dr. Yi-Ching Pan, Chair of the Department of Applied English at NPTU, and Dr. Mei-Jen Chen, who worked closely with instructors from all three universities through a series of online meetings to finalize the topic, scoring criteria, and procedures—ensuring a smooth and well-organized experience for all participants.
A Dynamic and Inspiring Topic
This year’s essay topic, “Studying Abroad,” was selected by Vice President Liu using a spinning wheel during the opening ceremony, adding a lively and interactive touch to the event. Guided by this theme, students from the three universities used English writing to explore the meaning and challenges of studying overseas. Through this process, they not only sharpened their language skills but also deepened their cultural awareness and broadened their global perspectives.
Empowering Students Through English Writing
Through English writing, students explored meaningful issues, expressed diverse perspectives, and deepened their understanding of different cultures. More than just a competition, the event served as a valuable platform for cross-campus exchange, global learning, and international connection.
